The Audi quattro made its debut on March 3, 1980, at the Geneva Motor Show. Work on the car began in February 1977. The inspiration came from winter testing of the Audi 200 and the Volkswagen Iltis. It was discovered during these tests that a slow, off-road vehicle equipped with 4x4 drive handled difficult conditions better than a sporty sedan with a powerful engine. Consequently, engineers decided to adapt four-wheel drive for use in a passenger car -- and thus the quattro concept was born.
