The Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944, at 5 p.m. and lasted until October 3. It was an armed action of the Polish resistance movement, mainly the Home Army, against the German troops occupying Warsaw. The aim of the uprising was to liberate the capital before the arrival of the Red Army to ensure Poland's sovereignty after the war. Despite initial successes, the insurgents were unable to maintain their positions in the face of overwhelming German forces and the lack of sufficient external help. After 63 days of extremely devastating and fierce fighting, the uprising was suppressed. About 16,000 insurgents and about 150-200,000 civilians died, and the city was almost completely destroyed. To this day, the Warsaw Uprising is a symbol of enormous courage and sacrifice in the name of higher values.
